The Guidelines for the care and welfare of Cephalopods in research have been published!
/0 Comments/in News, News Archive /by CephResThe “Guidelines for care and welfare of cephalopods in research” have been published as a Special Issue (supplement) of Laboratory Animals. These Guidelines are supported by the Association for Cephalopod Research – CephRes, the Federation for Laboratory Animal Science Associations – FELASA, and the COST Action FA1301 aimed to facilitate and support the cephalopod community in meeting the challenges resulting from the inclusion of cephalopod molluscs, the sole among invertebrates, in Directive 2010/63/EU.

/0 Comments/in News, News Archive /by CephResThe FA1301 COST Action is advertising a call for a STSM 2015 aimed to contribute to the development of the Cephalopod Welfare Index (FA1301-WG4).
The call is intended for young students and/or ESRs that are interested to study the interaction between basic, behavioral and physiological needs of species considered in this COST Action in assessing animal welfare.
The suggested workplan would be based on deducing data from literature. Highly motivated young early career are encouraged to apply!
The Host Institution for this STSM will be the Institute of Marine Research (Norway) aimed to research and advice on aquaculture and the ecosystems and providing high standard research facing with new scientific challenges. Among its scientific activities IMR is also focused on the concept of animal welfare. The Institute of Marine Research is the authorities’ centre of expertise for animal welfare in the fisheries and aquaculture industry. The Animal welfare research group plays a central role in building up our knowledge and developing methods in this area.
If you are interested send an email directly to Dr Giovanna Ponte within Thursday 30 July, 2015.

Call is open for the 2015 European Young Researchers’ Award
/0 Comments/in News, News Archive /by CephResThe European Young Researchers Award (EYRA) is granted since 2010 to researchers demonstrating outstanding research performance and leadership. It aims to inspire early stage researchers to incorporate a European dimension and perspective into their research.
The Award is granted each year; in odd years, the prize is dedicated to PhD candidates, and in even years to post-doctoral fellows. The prize-giving-ceremony is held every two years at the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) where the two recipients will present their work. The Award consists of a Certificate, waiving the participation fee to ESOF, a grant to cover travel and accommodation for the stay in the ESOF city and a two years’ free EuroScience membership.
The deadline for the 2015 call, dedicated to PhD candidates, is June 1st, 2015!

First Announcement & Call for Expression of Interest in Attending
Digestive system in cephalopods
a workshop under the aegis of FA1301 COST Action
COST Action FA1301 “CephsInAction” will convene for its annual meeting this year in Lisbon (Portugal; November 25 – 27, 2015). A “special scientific event” dedicated to the digestive system in cephalopods, with a focus on physiology, nutrition and metabolism will take place on Tuesday 24th November.
Overview
In contrast to many areas of cephalopod biology the digestive tract has not been the subject of such extensive study. However, understanding its normal functioning has wide ranging implications for aquaculture, fisheries and for the care and welfare of cephalopods in laboratories where research is now subject to regulation under Directive 2010/63/EU.
Focusing on such a specific topic, with presentations of recent data and advances, will represent a useful opportunity to get to know what is going on in this relatively neglected but important area.

Key Topics
A one-day workshop including sessions covering the following topics:
- Physiology and pharmacology of the digestive tract
- Capture, ingestion and diet of cephalopods in the wild
- Development and nutritional requirements of the first stages of life
- Digestion and metabolism
- The digestive system and cephalopod welfare
A publication based on the outcome of the workshop is planned!

COST H2020 Vademecum
/0 Comments/in News, News Archive /by CephResThe COST Association has the pleasure to inform you about the release of the new COST Vademecum.
As you already know, COST turned from the European Science Foundation to a proper COST Association funded through Horizon 2020 Framework Programme.
This new document was necessary following the release of the new set of COST Implementation Rules approved by the CSO in December 2014 and which entered into force on the 1st of January 2015. Additionally to the changes necessary to ensure the compliance of the Vademecum with COST Implementation rules, updates of the text have been done in order to clarify the document. It aims at being shorter, simpler and more user-friendly. Please note that no change of the reimbursement rules has been done.
The new Vademecum is now available
