CephsInAction Training School – Cephs Biology and Care (CBC2014)
13 – 17 October 2014, Centro Caprense Ignazio Cerio, Island of Capri, Naples (Italy)
The COST Action FA1301 has organized a 5-day Training School “Cephs Biology and Care 2014 (CBC2014)” on practical implications for researchers whose work must comply with Directive 2010/63/EU. The School was held on 13–17 October, 2014 at Centro Caprense Ignazio Cerio (Island of Capri, Naples, Southern Italy). The School aimed to familiarize EU based researchers and other potential users, including veterinarians, laboratory animal technologists and regulators, with best practice in cephalopod maintenance, care and welfare assessment needed for compliance with key aspects of Directive 2010/63/EU, and the underpinning biological information.
CBC2014 Evaluation Results
The School was organised under the aegis of the COST Action FA1301 and in collaboration with the Association for Cephalopod Research – CephRes.
Grants for travel and subsistence were provided, according to the COST rules.
FA1301 CBC2014 is part of the Cephs Biology and Care Program. It represents the first course operating in Europe specifically and exclusively designed for the cephalopod molluscs in compliance with Article 23 and Annex V of the Directive 2010/63/EU.
The length and the program of CBC2014 Course has been specifically designed to provide 40 hours of training including Core-, Function Specific (Prerequisite) and Function A (carrying out procedures on animals) Modules. The program has been designed in compliance with the requirements of the “Working document on the development of a common education and training framework to fulfill the requirements under the Directive 2010/63/EU” and “FELASA recommendations for the accreditation of Education and Training courses in Laboratory Animal Science”.
According to the above recommendations each ‘student’ has been individually assessed for the achieved learning outcomes (final examination). In compliance with the requirements of “provide arrangements to support students who need help to complete the course”, students that did not pass during the final examination session were allowed to attend to a Exam Retake session.
